The Oul Lammas fair in
Ballycastle has come and gone for
another year, the event which took place on
the last Monday and Tuesday of August, can
be revisited through a new one hour
DVD that has been released by ourselves at
Thompson Productions Garvagh.
And if you where at the fair
this year you could find yourself on the DVD
or if you want to see what all its about
your in the right place. During the
big weekend the Singing Farmer John
Watt and John Thompson captured the
entire happenings at the foot of the
Knocklayde mountains, starting off on
the Saturday before the fair with a heavy
horse show, fancy dress parade, and
vintage rally which always kick of the
festivities in Ballycastle each year.
During the two days of the
Oul Lammas Fair the cameras rolled through
the crowded streets, stopping every
now and then to have a look at the stall
holders marketing their wares from drapery
and fancy goods to the traditional
Dulse and Yellowman.
The short conversations with
some of the fairgoers which cover all sorts
of subjects from sheep dog trials, gathering
white heather right through to tip to
becoming a singing star!
And there are valuable
contributions made by a number of the
Singing Farmers musical friends who
were in attendance such as Trevor
Dixon, Curtis Magee,
Derek Mawhinney and Don
Rodgers.
All the fun of the fair has
been captured, including a visit to
Cullen's amusements down The Quay Road to
the Big Wheel at the seafront, which
provided an additional bit of excitement to
the event this year. There is even a
piece of Lammas Fair history thrown in for
good measure through archives cini-film of
the Lammas Fair back in 1968. The
background music for the production, which
includes "The Oul Lammas Fair"
song, was carefully planned to suit folks of
all ages.
